With a day's delay we set off towards Magdeburg. As we find out on the way, there are advantages to driving on Sundays. The highways are relatively empty and of course there are no trucks on the streets.

We arrive at the Petriförder parking space around 2 p.m. Usually the entrance is blocked by ground barriers. You can get your ticket at a machine and drive in. For now, however, the locks are down. This is due to the fact that someone knocked over the ticket machine and disabled it. So at the moment everyone has to do the free of charge parking space use :-)

This is located directly on the Elbe.

Unser erstes Ziel ist nur ein paar Meter entfernt. Die Lukasklause mit dem angebauten Otto-von-Gericke-Museum.

Der Turm der Lukasklause (Welscher Turm) war Teil der Stadtbefestigung, erbaut um 1279. Sein Mauerwerk ist zum Teil über 1,40m dick. Auch ein Teil der Stadtmauer ist hier noch zu finden.

Otto von Gericke war übrigens der Erfinder der Luftpumpe.

Wir schwingen uns auf unsere Räder und fahren die kurze Strecke zur Innenstadt, genauer zum alten Markt. Hier ist gerade ein Stand neben dem anderen aufgebaut und es werden allerlei Leckereien angeboten. Wir haben Hunger und genehmigen uns eine Bratwurst mit Brötchen.

Frisch gestärkt besichtigen wir den "Magdeburger Reiter", eine Bronzestatue. Gleich dahinter befindet sich das hübsche Rathaus. Ursprünglich erbaut im 12. Jahrhundert, wurde es im 2. Weltkrieg völlig zerstört und 1965 wieder aufgebaut.

Just a few meters down the street we come across "The green citadel of Magdeburg". This project was designed by Hundertwasser and built from 2004.

We examine it from all sides and from the inner courtyards and are fascinated by every sight.

The complex includes rental apartments, shops, restaurants and a hotel.

Nicht weit entfernt steht das Kloster "Unserer Lieben Frau". In der Klosteranlage befindet sich das Kunstmuseum. Die Fenster wurden mit 17 Spiegelpanelen versehen, die in unterschiedlichen Winkeln aufgeklappt werden können. Die Klosteranlage wurde im 11.-12. Jahrhundert errichtet.

Past the cathedral and across Hegelstrasse with its beautiful houses from the Wilhelminian era, you continue to the Sternbrücke. Construction of the bridge began in 1914 and, due to structural difficulties, lasted until 1922. A structure made of concrete and steel was of course modern at the time.

We cycle through the Rotehorn city park, which is located on an Elbe island. Our way leads to a salt spring. A sign explains that the water has a salt content of 6-7 grams per liter.

Fort XII fortifications are located on the southern tip of the island. We can't find them, but we don't feel like looking either. Instead, we enjoy the drive back through the park and along the banks of the Elbe to the motorhome parking space.

Shortly before we reach the mobile home, we see a replica of a historic ship mill. Next to it is the Magdeburg sandy beach.

Magdeburg - October 1st, 2012

Today we take the mobile home with us and drive to the Elbauenpark.

If you want to visit it, drive to Herrenkrugstraße and turn into Tessenowstraße from there. "Finanzamt" is signposted there. Turn in anyway and drive approx. 200 meters to the Elbauenpark car park.

We are especially excited about the millennium tower. A journey through 6000 years of science and technology history is presented here.

We are then disappointed at the ticket booth. The park is open, but the tower and butterfly house are closed on Mondays. We are frustrated! Of course we know that museums are closed on Mondays, but we hadn't seen the tower and the butterfly house as a museum.

Well, there is nothing to be done about it and we still buy tickets for the park. It is so worth seeing and the entrance fee for the park alone is only 1 € / person. We also buy a plan for € 0.50 and go on an interesting walk.

Passing pretty flower beds, we reach a climbing rock.

Wir wollen jetzt aber nicht klettern :-) und begeben uns in den Irrgarten.

It continues past the wildlife park to the "end of the world".

It's good that someone built a wall at the "end of the world". Otherwise someone might tumble off the window :-)

Der Park bietet außerdem eine Sommerrodelbahn, attraktive Plätze zum Verweilen und einen Abenteuerspielplatz.

Die Spiegel auf dem Bild "singen". Das heißt, sie geben Töne von sich, wenn man daran vorbei geht.

Wir erreichen den Jahrtausendturm. Davor sind Themengärten angelegt.

Auf dem Rückweg gelangen wir an einen "Farben-Wasserfall".

We leave the Elbauenpark and drive to the Magdeburg waterway intersection. Here you can marvel at an impressive - albeit now obsolete - ship lift.

Seit Oktober 2003 ist die neue Schleuse in Betrieb.

Neben dem oberen Teil der Schleuse befinden sich 3 riesige Becken, in die das Wasser gepumpt wird, bis sich der Wasserstand auf dem Niveau des unteren Teils der Schleuse befindet. Das ganze lässt sich von einer Aussichtsplattform besichtigen, die jedoch erst einmal erklommen werden muss. Das heißt: Treppen steigen!
